Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS)
serves 3rd annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Women’s Shelter

by Teny Movel, October 2008

On Monday October 6th 2008 I participated to help the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) of the Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Toronto with their annual Thanksgiving Dinner mission. This was the third year the AFSS provides a classic turkey dinner to the Street Haven Womens shelter serving over 100 women. Through donations, AFSS volunteers cook the dinner with all its trimmings and bring to the shelter to be served to the homeless or disadvantaged. Each year more and more women attend. This was the first time I volunteered along side many young volunteers and I found this experience very insightful.

A Success Story - Newcomer thanks Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) Minimize

In 2007, when I first called Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Toronto, I did not realize how lucky I was to be recommended to the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS). I was really impressed with the assistance and support they were giving to newcomers. They provided us with full service of settlement starting from welcoming in the airport to helping with moving, furniture, resume writing, employment and so much more, to make us feel welcome and part of the Armenian community in Toronto.

s-Edgars celebration1.jpg

As a newcomer we did not know how to start a new life in Canada. A detailed action plan prepared by Armenian Family Support Services led us to success path. I was referred to ACCESS, an employment agency by AFSS and that helped me a lot in my job search efforts. I managed to find a job through job-connect program and my story was accepted as a success story. I was invited to celebrate this event and share my experience at “Walk of  Fame” event at ACCESS downtown location. I was really happy to share my success story with others and have AFSS diligent members Maida Icliates and Rita Odjaghian present in that evening.

I’m very proud and admire all the AFSS members. They are doing magic work which one must express deepest respect to all of them.

Newcomers' Gathering Organized by Armenian Family Support Services Minimize

On Sunday, November 9, 2008 The Newcomer’s Committee of the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) provided an Information and Social gathering for persons and families who have come to Canada within the past year. This venue allowed the Newcomers an opportunity to get to know each other, share experiences and develop a support network.

Maida Icliates, Chair of  the  Board of  Directors and Rita Odjaghian, Newcomer’s Project coordinator welcomed the participants, outlined the services of the AFSS and how the AFSS can assist them, particularly during this  transitional period in their lives.

Edgar Manukyan, A Newcomer to Canada, spoke to the group and provided his first hand experience in Canada.

Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian and His Grace, Bishop Vazken Mirzakhanian spoke about being part of the bigger family at the Church with all activities and events. The Newcomers each introduced themselves, where they came from and how long they have been in Canada. Following this group discussion, everyone was gifted a Holy Bible blessed and signed by Father Zareh.

Help Us, Help Newcomers

The Aremnian Family Support Services (AFSS) has been providing furniture and furnishings to our newcomer families and those in need for more than five years; we thank all donors who have made this mission possible through their generous donations of used furniture and funrnishings and thank all those who made monetory donations to support the cause.

The task of collecting donated items when donors want the items removed, storing them and then delivering when families request the items has been quite challenging to manage; at this time, we are in need of a storage facility preferably in an industrial unit, to store the donated items and be able to provide those in need when a request is received.
189.jpg
Hence, we ask our community to assist us in finding a suitable storage space approx. 400 sq. ft., for temporary storage of donated furniture and furnishings. If you do possess an unused space in your industrial unit, warehouse, plant or office, and would like to partner with us in our beautiful mission, please contact AFSS office at:(416)431-5549 and speak with Ms. Seta Kevorkian to receive additional information regarding this request. If no one is in the office, please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued support in providing our Newcomers to Canada with unique warmth.

Newcomers Gathering

The Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) had another successful event for our Newcomers on May 15, 2011. More than twenty new immigrants from Iraq and Armenia attended this event, which took place at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Scarborough.

The event started with a ’Meet and Greet’ exercise where each newcomer shared his or her experiences of immigration and employment. The room was filled with camaraderie and caring atmosphere. Our Newcomers had a diverse professional background from medical, engineering and finance and marketing fields.

I’d like to express our thanks to our guest speaker Mrs. Alice Khajadourian, General Counsellor-COSTI Immigrant Services. Mrs. Khajadourian provided the newcomers with extremely helpful information about services offered by COSTI and other community agencies.

SOUP KITCHEN - SUNDAY JAN. 24th Minimize

Dear Friends,

As we hear of the devastating news on the island nation of Haiti, we are reminded of the similar natural disaster beset the Armenian nation in 1988. The world at that time responded to the devastation with such outpouring of love and goodwill towards our people and nation.  It is now our turn to respond to the people of Haiti.

Every year, the Armenian Family Support Services “Soup Kitchen” takes place in the month of January to raise funds for Soup Kitchens in Armenia. With the impending situation in Haiti and in keeping true to our mission “to help those in need”, the AFSS Board of Directors in conjunction with the Holy Trinity Armenian Church have dedicated this year’s Soup Kitchen in support of the earthquake victims in Haiti. All proceeds collected will go to  the Canadian Red Cross - Haiti Relief. www.redcross.ca. As of January 15, 2010, the Canadian Red Cross appeals for more financial support to sustain emergency relief.

Enjoy a hot bowl of soup and know that your financial support will go to the much needed food, water and supplies in Haiti.

Please join us this

Sunday, January 24th, 2010,

at 1:00 pm

at Holy Trinity Armenian Church,

920 Progress Avenue in Scarborough.

As Armenians in Toronto, let’s join the world community in the relief efforts for Haiti. Let’s show our support, as a collective community, and give back the love and goodwill that was bestowed to us 21 years ago.

For further information or to make a donation, please call the AFSS office at (416) 431-5549 or the Church office at (416) 431-3001.

Friday April 17th, 2009 could not have been a better day for the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) and the ACYOC Central Council to have held the forth Annual Armenian Memorial Faith Build.

Collaborating
with the faith-based, non-profit organization of Habitat for Humanity, a group of 24 energetic youth and adults gathered at the residential construction site at 20 Hartford Avenue in East Scarborough on one of spring’s warmest days.

Participants of this initiative were given the responsibility to work on the preliminary stages of construction on several residential homes. Whether it was nailing support beams together in a basement, or sawing wood for exterior framework, participants were able to directly contribute to an excellent cause regardless of possessing any prerequisite skills in carpentry. We are in a celebration mood to welcome our additions to the Canadian Armenian Community!!

Yes, we are proud to announce that through the hard work and dedication of FSS Hay Doun, our sister office in Montreal, thirty Armenian applicants, having fled from war-torn Iraq and who have been residing with their children in other countries equally harsh and unsafe, have been approved to come to Canada through the Collective Sponsorship program.

There are many more applicants and we are hopeful they too will be accepted.

As the families arrive, they will need our support for their new life in Canada. How can you help celebrate and support them?

Join us this Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 12:30 pm at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church, where a group of Armenian faithful ladies are bringing their heartfelt services preparing us one delicious lunch to remember. The entire proceeds from this luncheon will support the newcomers with their transition.

The Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) and FSS Hay Doun have been helping settle and integrate Armenian Newcomers into the Canadian Armenian community life for many years. This being a larger group of newcomers, your support and donations will ensure that we are able to assist them with resettlement into a safer life that we, here in Canada, have been so fortunate to have.

AFSS Newcomer’s Project once again assists two families with home settlement  - by Rita Odjaghian, Chair, Newcomer’s Project

One aspect of the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) Newcomer’s Project is to assist Newcomers in finding suitable housing. Following this important step, the HIMA (Help Immediate Members Appeal), an email appeal to our Armenian community members to donate gently used furniture, allows us to fulfill the second stage which is to furnish the homes.

On Saturday November 15th, 2008, we did provide home furnishings for two more Armenian newcomers families. Despite the rain, we were really successful in providing everything for our Newcomers families. The key ingredients to the success were:

  • Our generous and beautiful Armenian Community
  • Previous Newcomers who have now already settled, came and volunteered to move the furniture
  • Our “Magic Moving Truck” of course with the generosity of Mr. Aram Mazmanyan, who drives across the GTA picking up donated furnishings, helping us with uploading and unloading and delivers the items.
  • Last but not least, Armenian Family Support Services team members.

189.jpg

189b.jpg

It was very similar to a construction block, all the above ingredients gave us the power to furnish empty apartments for our Newcomers families. And if one of the elements was to be missing, then we would be facing huge challenges to complete our mission flawlessly.

The magical part of our mission is that it becomes contagious and the majority of our newcomers are expressing their wishes that once they get settled, they are ready to help us. And the beautiful experience we had was that our older newcomers came and helped us to move the furniture.

On behalf of the Newcomers families, we are immensely grateful to the families that have reached out to us and donated furnishings.

Our objective is to provide support and coaching to Armenian Newcomers. We are thriving to provide more of a personal and customized services which we share with you. We would like to keep our services at the same level even if we grow and become bigger. This is highly dependant to our generous and passionate community’s support.

Please keep us in mind and expect to see more and more news from us.

Thank you again and we wish you Health, Joy and Happiness in this festive season.
