Requiem Service will be held for the Victims of 1988 Armenia Earthquake
December 7, 2008, marks the 20th anniversary of the 1988 Earthquake in Armenia. On this solemn and ominous occasion, and upon the directive of Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate a special requiem service will be held in Holy Trinity Armenian Church on Sunday, December 7, 2008. We will remember the lives of over 25, 000 victims, and the countless more families who were displaced and left hurt and homeless, offering our prayers for their memory and repose for their souls. |
 | On December 7, 1988, at 11:41 a.m. local time a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook northwestern Armenia and was followed four minutes later by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock. Swarms of aftershocks, some as large as magnitude 5.0, continued for months in the area around Spitak. The earthquakes hit an area 80 km in diameter comprising the towns of Leninakan, Spitak, Stepanavan, and Kirovakan in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.
While the earthquake exposed the flaws in the construction, it also exposed the good in people around the world. The cooperation of international teams in rescue efforts, the willingness of groups everywhere to contribute financial aid, and especially the undaunted determination of the Armenians themselves to rebuild their cities and their lives are worthy of commendation.

The Great Equalizer
Sarah Shahmuradyan - Glendon - GPA:8.5
|
Living as an Armenian refugee in Germany instilled Sarah Shahmuradyan with a burning desire to make the world more just and fair. While her parents, both ethnographers whose jobs disappeared when the Soviet Union imploded, waited in vain for German citizenship, they encouraged their bright daughter to excel at school. “Education is one door you want to fling wide open,” they told her. Shahmuradyan was 10 when Canada threw open its doors to her family. Fluent in Armenian, Russian and German, she felt at home in multicultural Scarborough and soon soared to the top of her class – in English. |

| Grade 11 law sparked her interest, but the teenager involved with the student council, school newspaper and Amnesty International aimed to pursue social work until she realized politics could correct injustice. Now the politics and sociology student , who has added French to her arsenal, plans to study law, then become an international legal policy analyst> Last summer, she worked with new immigrant programs for Ontario’s Ministry of Education and tasted her future. “Law, like education, is one of the great equalizers,” says the 20 year old “CSI” fan who likes to dance to CHUM-FM. “Regardless of your background, you should be treated the same. Rights are the same everywhere. Freedoms should be the same everywhere.

On February 28th St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School was honoured by the presence of Mrs. Hranoush Hagopian, Minister of Diaspora Affairs, who was visiting Toronto from Armenia. The Minister was accompanied by Mr. Arman Akopian Charge d'Affaires, Republic of Armenia in Canada, His Eminence Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, and Rev. Arch. Fr. Zareh Zargarian.
|

| They were greeted by the Principal Mrs. Sonia Kradjian and students who were dressed in traditional Armenian costumes, carrying bread and salt to welcome the guest according to Armenian customs. The remaining students, on their part, sang the Canadian and Armenian national anthems and recited “Mer Oukhde” followed by two songs ‘Badanegan” and “Nation Reborn”, which were well received by the Minister.
She in turn congratulated the principal, the teachers and the parents for their relentless efforts in implementing the Armenian identity and sense of belonging in each student. This memorable day was marked by sheer excitement as students gathered near the Minister to ask questions and take pictures with her. We are so proud of our Minister’s visit and we embrace the inspiration she left on our students.

ACYOC Palm Sunday Luncheon
Maral Deveci, Junior. ACYOC Advisor
|
Every year on Palm Sunday, the members of Armenian Church Youth Organization of Canada gather in church, take part in Divine Liturgy and receive special blessing from Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian. This tradition is to keep the firm bond between the church and its faithful youth. As Fr. Zareh noted during his sermon directed to the youth, it is very important to have our new generation active in the life of Armenian Church. This in turn will protect them from the numerous troubles of the dangerous world we live in, created because of the growing gap between people and their faith. Our purpose is to eliminate that gap. His speech was a reminder that being an Armenian and living in the Diaspora is a choice that each family makes, a choice that comes with hard work, dedication and sacrifice which we owe to our ancestors and heroes of the Armenian History.

| Holy Trinity Armenian Church Annual Picnic took place on Sunday, June 22, 2008. This event was dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of this parish. Despite the nice weather in earlier hours of the day, the parish council members who organized this event, decided to have the gathering at church instead of the park. We enjoyed both outdoors and indoors. It was a wise decision considering the afternoon’s heavy rain. |
 | Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian held the Morning Service after which everyone gathered in “Magaros Artinian” Hall or outside the church where the tables, chairs and tents were set up nicely.
 |
After some sunny hours the rain started forcing everyone to take refuge inside the church hall. The Women's Guild members went out of their way preparing and serving homemade delicious appetizers, salads and deserts. Hot & fresh barbeque served straight from the grill, live music performed by Mr. Artinian, Hrant Ketenjian and Grigor Shahmuradian. Singing, raffle and games for children kept everyone happy and busy for the whole afternoon. |
This was another great event organized by our wonderful group of volunteers. Special thanks to our energetic, hardworking and fun parish council and women’s guild members. Without their dedicated and heartfelt work this day would not be as successful and enjoyable as it was.

The Bible Exploration Group (BEG) Visits Leisureworld
By Nancy Kuyumcu
"Hold on to each other with all your might, no matter what," was the advice one of the elderly female Armenian residents of Leisureworld Caregiving Centre gave to the young members of Holy Trinity Church’s Wednesday evening Bible Exploration Group when they visited the Scarborough retirement home recently.
The outing was an opportunity for the group to give back to the community and, more importantly, to put into practice some of the Christian values discussed at the weekly meetings, according to Father Zareh Zargarian, who leads the Bible study group. Read more... |

Armenia Tree Project: Setting International Standards For Forest Education & Conservation

~ Adrina Bardekjian Ambrosii, MFC (www.adrina.ca)
Founded in 1994 by Armenian-American, Carolyn Mugar, Armenia Tree Project (ATP) is a non-profit organization (NGO) that focuses on reforestation, education, stewardship and poverty prevention. In May, I had the privilege of visiting the ATP office in the country’s capital, Yerevan. With offices in Armenia and the United States, ATP is working collaboratively with government, universities, other NGOs and communities to mitigate the devastating situation that the country is facing as a result of deforestation. |

Dear Faithful,
We are happy to announce that Altar Server and Deacon Training sessions are being re-introduced on September 12, 2007, under the learned and loving leadership of Deacon Nurhan Ipekcian.
Encourage our youth, over 12 years, to participate in these sessions.
The practices will take place every Wednesday, 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. | Those youth successful in completing the Deacon’s training program receive Holy Orders, whereby they dedicate their lives directly to God and to serve in his Church.
Holy Orders are one of the Sacraments of the Armenian Church, along with Baptism, Chrismation, Penance, Holy Communion, Marriage, and Anointing of the Sick
A sacrament is a rite which not only signifies some specific grace, but which produces that grace in the souls of the person to whom it is administered.
The Armenian word for sacrament is khorhoort or "mystery." This implies that the fruits of the sacraments are received mysteriously. Although everything which is in and of the Church is sacramental, there are seven formal sacraments of the Armenian Church which correspond to the different states and situations of a person's life.
A good Christian has before him a wide scope of activity in the community, if he or she wishes to participate in the work of the Church. |
 | It is a great service to the Church if a family encourages one of its young members to consecrate his life to the service of God and His Church.
Kindly inform the church office of your participants’ names. 920 Progress Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario M1G 3T5 Tel: (416)431-3001 Fax: (416)431-0269

Trip of a Lifetime
Mona Selyan
Someone told me that you know that you’ve had a good vacation when it alternately seems like it lasted for 2 days and 2 months.
My pilgrimage to Armenia this fall was a good vacation. Led by our pastor, Rev. Father Arch. Zareh Zargarian, the trip was an emotional roller-coaster. The agenda was packed full; and as a pilgrimage should be, it was chock-full of churches, monasteries and fortresses. |

| After our return to Toronto, I cried for 2 days and then slept for 2 days. Although this was actually my 3rd visit to the fatherland, it was the first in 31 years. A LOT had changed since 1976! A devastatingly deadly earthquake and aftershocks. Independence from Soviet control. All-out war with neighbouring Azerbaijan over Nagorno Karabagh. We are one of the oldest civilizations on the planet, yet Armenia is a country in the throes of growing pains. Perhaps the most moving sentiment that I have is the sense of pride in what has been achieved, tempered with shame at not having done more to help. Read more... See the photos...

YERAZ Youth Choir attended "A Chorus Christmas" at the Roy Thompson Hall
|
 |
|
 |
|
 |
|
On Saturday December 15, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. the Yeraz Youth Choir of Holy Trinity Armenian Church attended the Toronto Children's Chorus’ annual performance of "A Chorus Christmas" at the Roy Thomson Hall.
It was a wonderful and educational opportunity for the YYC boys & girls to hear the beautiful voices of more than 400 choristers. Founded in 1978, the Toronto Children's Chorus (TCC) is recognized as one of the world's leading choral ensembles. |

|

|
The choir has preformed in Europe, Australia, South Africa, Russia and the United States. It was a joyous and a memorable afternoon for our children to hear the younger singers and very inspirational to listen to the older Alumni Choir. The audience sing-along of Christmas Carols and the lovely accompaniments of the Harp, Viola, Flute, Cello, Percussion and the True North Brass were fun for all involved. | Established just recently, the Yeraz Youth Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Meline Afyan, has14 members but our dream is to become a large, musical and, why not, traveling choir as the ones we witnessed on this wonderful trip. For all inquiries please call the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church office at (416)431-3001.

 |
|
On Saturday, December 22, 2007 the Women’s Guild of Holy Trinity Armenian Church celebrated Christmas at Magaros Artinian Hall.
The Christmas party started at 8:30 p.m. and after half an hour the hall was packed with people. Committee members did their best to make the party memorable and heartwarming and full of fabulous surprises.
The evening was spiced up by two performances from a pair of professional Latino Ballroom dancers whose energy and connectivity got the attendees to the dance floor. |

| The party went lively along with Lucine Abikian and Lillian Galstanian who sang our favorite Christmas Carols. An unexpected appearance of Santa Claus and Ms. Claus brought more cheers and fun to the event.

|
Everyone had a wonderful time tasting the Armenian dishes and dancing to the joyous music which was provided by “Sound of Med” – DJ Harout Ghazarian.
On behalf of the Women’s Guild we would like to take this opportunity and express a thank you to all members who donated valuable big-lottery gifts for this special occasion. We wish you and your families a year of blessed peace, filled with joy and love!!! Although it was a lot of work, our event was a great success!!! More photos... |

Armenian Christmas Weekend - January 5 & 6, 2008
|
 |
|
 |
|
 |
By: Mona Selyan This year, Armenians all over North America were fortunate to be able to attend Armenian Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services with no work or “outside-world” constraints; remaining faithful to the traditions of their forefathers, Armenians continue to celebrate Christmas on January 6th. This year, our feast days fell on a weekend; Sunday January 6 marked our Armenian Christmas, the day that Armenians celebrate the birth and Theophany of our Lord Jesus Christ. Theophany or Epiphany (means "revelation of God," which is the central theme of the Christmas Season in the Armenian Church. |
 | The solemn Armenian Christian Christmas greeting, both during the “kiss of peace” and for 40 days after Christmas, is “Christ is born and revealed to us” and the response is “Blessed is the revelation of Christ”.
On Saturday night, January 5, we were blessed to have over 900 faithful attend our beautiful service, celebrated by our Pastor, Rev. Father Arch Zareh Zargarian. Formal guests to our service were Reverend Canon Harold Nahabedian, of St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church, accompanied by Rev. Philip Hopson of Anglican Church of Toronto. After introduction by Father Zareh, Father Harold gave us the Christmas message in his sermon.
Following the liturgy, the clergy let the processional into the church lobby area, where Father Zareh performed the “house blessing” rite, blessing water, salt and bread. “Blessing of Water” is conducted in the Armenian Church to commemorate Christ’s Baptism. Those faithful close to Father Zareh were well-sprinkled with some of the blessed water! Celebratory liquors were circulated by the Parish Council among all the faithful present, as well as cubes of the sweet bread “cheoreg”, prepared by Mrs. Sona Mutevelli, and blessed by Father Zareh.
 |
On Christmas day, January 6, Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, who visited Toronto specifically for this important feast day. His Grace was attended by our Pastor, Father Zareh Arch. Zargarian, and Father Sarkis Arch. Gulyan. Holy Communion for the 2,000 faithful attending the joyous Christmas service was administered by all three clergy! | Immediately following the service, small cups of muron-blessed water were distributed to those patient parishioners who waited to take home some of this special symbol from our Armenian Christmas service.
